Luke concludes his account of gospel ministry among Jews living near Jerusalem with Peter, in Jesus' name, healing a paralysed man and performing an even greater mirarcle. Seeing these mighty works leads many to 'turn to the Lord'. Reading them teaches us that: 1. The risen Jesus is able to heal and raise throughout all the world. 2. This is solid ground for faith. 3. ...and a reason for living hope in our healing and resurrection.

After disobeying God Adam and Eve find themselves banished from the paradise that He had created for them and having to bring up their two sons, Cain and Abel, in a harsher environment. Both sons also face the choice between walking in the Way of Faith (in trusting in the Lord's provision and goodness) or defiantly walking in the Way of Futility (by wandering away from Him).

The second act of Acts begins with the conversion of Saul who, after approving of the stoning of Stephen, continued 'breathing threats and murder' against Jesus' followers. From Saul's encounter on the road from Jerusalem to Damascus we are taught that the risen Lord Jesus: 1. is real and at work. 2. is the one in authority. 3. is sovereign. 4. has suffered and so must his witnesses.

The first man and woman are found enjoying a 'flourishing' relationship with the Lord God, in the garden He has made for them, only to see their relationship with Him 'fractured' when they are: 1. deceived into questioning God's command. 2. called out to answer God's questions. 3. speechless before God's judgements. 4. humbled by God's severe mercy.

Continuing Luke's account of how the Gospel is spread from Jerusalem to Samaria, Philip is suddenly called to travel south to Gaza where he meets a Jewish Ethiopian eunuch reading Isaiah 53. Philip's actions teach us: 1. the humble witness serves the Lord's plan. 2. the willing witness finds the Lord has gone ahead. 3. the wise witness understands his context. 4. the faithful witness declares Jesus. 5. the witness learns that people need Jesus, not them.

After the prologue in the first chapter of Genesis, in which God declares that everything He has created is 'very good', the second chapter describes four pairings that are 'made for each other' : 1. the man + the ground. 2. the garden + the man. 3. the man + the woman. 4. the man + the woman in the garden of the LORD God.

After the stoning of Stephen in Jerusalem, Luke's narrative follows the scattering of believers to Judea and Samaria where the Deacon Philip preaches Christ to receptive crowds. We consider: 1. the joy of Spiritual release - that only the Gospel brings. 2. the wonder of Spiritual renewal - as the Spirit of God is poured out on the Samaritans. 3. the snare of Spiritual abuse - shown by Simon who thought he could buy Spiritual gifts.

In this series on Genesis we examine the first of the five books of the Bible which Jesus and his New Testament contemporaries called 'The books of Moses'. It begins with details about the creation of the world which provide answers to those who ask: 1. What are we to know? 2. How did God create? 3. Who did He create for? 4. What was it all for?

At the start of another New Year the Psalmist challenges us to place our whole reliance on God alone. To do this we should: 1. live according to His word. 2. be different from non-Christians. 3. want to join together for fellowship with other Christian believers.

From this account of God's call to Joshua to lead the People of Israel across the River Jordan into the land that He had promised to Moses, we can begin the New Year mindful of what God expects of us. To be people who: 1. believe the promises of God. 2. are sure of their inheritance. 3. follow their leader's example.

Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
