1. The room was ready - just as Jesus said. 2. The betrayal came - just as Jesus said. 3.The feast will be fulfilled - just as Jesus said. 4. Followers are willing but weak - just as Jesus said. 5. Jesus has gone before - just as he said. (See also: Exodus 24:1-8, Zechariah 13:7)

Luke continues his account of the missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas in Greece as they reach Iconium. In a Jewish synagogue there Paul boldly preaches the Gospel - the word of God's grace. This word: 1. has the right to be heard - because of whose word it is and 2. it divides - as Jesus foretold it would. (see also 1 Corinthians 1:17, Luke 12:49-53, Romans 5:10.

Paul, in chapter 3 of his second letter to Timothy, provides 8 ways in which we can support a Gospel minister: 1. Encourage external support. 2. Respond to his preaching. 3. Remind him to be strong in God's grace. 4. Be loyal to him. 5. Recognise his weighty calling. 6. Avoid distracting side shows. 7. Be aware of how the devil might use you. 8. Take care of his practical needs.

Leaving Paphos in Cyprus, Paul and Barnabas sail north to the southern coast of Turkey and then journey on to Antioch in Pisidia. In the synagogue there Paul delivers his first recorded sermon in which he declares that 'The message of this salvation' (v.26): 1. is founded upon grace. 2. has been fulfilled in grace. 3. brings freedom in grace. Many receive this message joyfully but their leaders jealously reject it.

Paul encourages Timothy, a young church leader in Ephesus, by explaining how suffering and sharing the Gospel are related. 1. Suffering is the centre of the Gospel. 2. In the Gospels Jesus sets the pattern... suffering now and glory to come. 3. We can share in suffering for the Gospel by God's power. 4. Suffering is not a cause of shame...it is a badge of honour. 5. We should not be ashamed to testify about Jesus, our Saviour.

Following the Apostles' sent mission from Jerusalem to Judea/Samaria and the establishment of a church in Antioch, Luke tells how the Gospel is spread to Asia Minor and then into Europe. From this we see that mission: 1. is God's work. 2. is God's word going out through human witnesses. 3. starts, continues and ends in prayer and dependence upong God. 4. should be strategic. 5. recognised as a spiritual matter and a spiritual battle.

Long before Google Maps the 'A to Z' map book was used to get from any starting point to a desired destination. The Bible is our spritual 'A to Z' which guides us from: 1. 'A' - Where we all start with God. 2. 'to' - Hope in the promise of salvation. 3. 'Z' - Celebrating salvation in the coming of Jesus Christ. (See also 1 Chronicles 1:1-27 and Luke 3:23-38 for other references to Shem).

Luke's account of King Herod's execution of James (the brother of John) and arrest of Peter show that: 1. Violent hands are real and hurt the church. 2. ...but the church always has prayer. 3. Violent hands are powerless when the Lord decides to rescue. 4. Vainglorious words are silenced by the God of Glory. 5. The Word of God prevails.

In this passage in Genesis Moses describes the world after the flood by using three tightly organised, edited lists of Noah's offspring in which we find: 1. This is our world...in its character and behaviour. 2. It is a divided family from which the nations develop. 3. It is a scattered people who... 4. Need to be gathered by God's Grace. Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
