In Matthew 6:1-21 Jesus stresses that private prayer is the most important means of communicating with and enjoying God. His example of what we should pray begins by reminding us: 1. what a unique Privilege Jesus' followers have in being able to call God 'Father'. 2. that our Priority should be to declare God's character to all the world. On our church's 95th Birthday, we are reminded how God's providence: 1. is Remarkable and sometimes comes from remarkable sources. 2. Reveals God's love to all people. 3. demands a Response of faith in Him and desire to share God's Word. 4. always Refills us with His Word and Spirit. 5. Revives souls...offering the certainty of eternal life with Him. The book of Judges ends with three chapters of events which pre-date Samson's time. Chapter 19 records an unprecedented evil for Isarael. In Chapter 20 the LORD judges Israel's evil. Chapter 21 sees Israel adopt a king-less solution with everyone continuing to do 'what was right in his own eyes'. Thanks be to God for sending Jesus, our deliverer, to take on Himself even our most extreme rebellion...if we will trust in Him. See also: Genesis 19:1-11, Romans 11:1-2a

Paul's declaration 'nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus', at the end of chapter 8, may surprise those expecting to find an 'Amen'. It follows at the end of chapter 11, but to say it we must pray to the Lord to humble us so that: 1. we trust His patience, 2. we wonder at His generosity, 3. we learn His wisdom. The Psalmist demonstrates 'confidence in faith' drawn from long expereince of God's faithful love and His answers to prayer. Yet despite experiencing bodily decline he contines to praise God for the past and praise Him, with confidence, for the future, knowing he is one of God's redeemed.

This chapter finds Paul praying that the Lord will: 1. have mercy, by saving those with stumbling feet, ignorant minds, hostile hearts and silent mouths. 2. give beautiful feet and tireless hands to those proclaiming the one name of Jesus to all. Following the death of Samson 'there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes'. These two chapters tell of 4 houses. The first 3 describe the spritual chaos within Micah, Levi and Dan. The 4th, at Shiloh, is where the tabernacle had been set up, representing Godliness and to remind Israel that the LORD is still King. See also Romans 7:7-8, Joshua 21:1-3, Judges 1:34, Hebrews 9:1-28

Paul pours out his breaking heart to the point of wishing he could change places with fellow Israelites outside Jesus' Kingdom, if by that means he could save them. But knowing that only Christ can save he urges believers to have a Christ-like: 1. compassion for those 'cut off' from God's Grace. 2. conviction in God's calling of, and mercy/patience towards, His children. Continuing on from the accounts of the LORD's calling of Samson to be set apart for the purpose of beginning to save Israel and three occasions when the Spirit of the LORD was present with Samson, we have three fuurther aspects to consider: 1. Samson is a sinner. 2. Samson struggles with his calling, 3. Samson is a picture of Israel. See also Romans 7:21, Luke 4:5-8, Romans 8:3-4

Since the earliest church times believers around the world have been killed for their faith in Jesus. As we consider what we would say to their families left behind, Paul's letter explains that in 'all these things' we can say: 1. God is for us. 2. We are more-than-conquerors. Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

HBEFC LRes-7

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
