After the healing of the lame beggar at the Beautiful Gate, Peter and John are arrested by the religious leaders for preaching about Jesus. The next day four 'scenes' unfold: 1. the 'astonishing boldness' of Peter's response (5-14) 2. the enraged leader's attempts to 'control the narrative' by silencing them with threats (15-17) 3. Peter's 'civil disobedience' through obeying God rather than man (18-22) 4. On being freed, Peter and John pray with their friends for continued 'boldness for Christ' (23/31)

Paul concludes his letter to the Christians in Rome by asking them to: a. welcome and assist Phoebe from the church in Cenchreae (1-2) b. greet the many named 'fellow workers in Christ Jesus...with a holy kiss' (3-16a) c. receive the greetings of Paul's fellow workers as they share the Gospel message to all nations (16b, 21-23)

Luke Relton (Hamilton Road)
After Matthew records Jesus' invitation 'Come to me ...and I will give you rest', Jesus continues '...Learn from me for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls'. From this we learn that: 1. Jesus is gentle to those who come to Him in humility. 2. We too should be gentle because He is gentle. 3. We should be gentle in our dealings with those within our fellowship...at home...or with those seeking answers about God.

The 'elder' who writes this letter reminds Christian believers what it means to keep walking in truth and love. In addition to providing reassurance, we are required: a. to love one another as Christ loves. b. to live according to Christ's teaching. We are also warned to guard against false teachers, who deny Jesus Christ came in the flesh. See also: John 13:34-35, John 17:17-18

As in his previous chapter, Luke recounts: a sign, amazed obervers, Peter's explanation and then an exhortation that demanded a response. 1. The sign was a lame man who expected money but received total healing. 2. The people saw the sign and were offered total spiritual restoration through Jesus.

In Paul's penultimate chapter of his letter to the Romans he announces his plans to visit them after he has visited Jerusalem. He emphasises the need for all believers to: a. strive for genuine fellowship with each other (22-24,29.32) b. share investment by supporting ministry to unbelievers (24b) c. make it a cheerful obligation to provide ongoing care to those within the fellowship who need it (25-28). d. place total dependance on God through urgent and active prayer (30-33).

After about 3,000 foreign visitors to Jerusalem responded to Peter's message that Jesus was their risen Messiah, by being baptised, what happened next? Luke records that they: 1. devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching by meeting in fellowship with a new attitude of heart and fear of God (42-43) 2. shared/sold their possessions to benefit others in need (44-45) 3. gave thanks to God who continued each day to add to their number (46-47)

In the concluding chapters of Paul's letter to the church in Rome we find a lot in common with his opening section in chapter 1:1-17. 1. He is proud, in Christ (14-19) in that a) he is satisfied with the believers there. b) he is proud, in Christ, of his priestly service of proclaiming the gospel of God. 2. He is ambitious for Christ (20-24) in that c) his ambition is to preach to those who have never heard it. d) he has longed to visit Rome and hopes to do so as he journeys to Spain.

As we give thanks to God for the Harvest, we reflect on the event when the Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles to speak about God's salvation in many languages that could be understood by the different nationalities visiting Jerusalem at Pentecost. Peter explains to them the prophecy that in 'the last days' the Holy Spirit would be poured out on all Jews and Gentiles who call on Jesus. He exhorts them (and us) to repent, be baptised and receive forgiveness for sin before Jesus returns.

Paul Smith (Broadstairs)
Towards the end of Paul's letter to his friends in the Philippian church he encourages them not to be anxious but rather to bring their concerns to God in prayer. He also commands them to fill their hearts and minds with a list of good things to help them follow Christ Jesus's example.

Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
