Stephen, one of the Godly and faithful men chosen to take on the practical ministry of distributing aid to widows and also preaching about Jesus, finds himself falsely accused of blasphemy and brought before the high priest to explain why he has spoken against Moses and the law and against God and His Temple. The same Spirit, who speaks through Stephen's reply is able to change hearts.

The second passage within the first chapter of John's Gospel records the testimony of John the Baptist given to the priests and Levites who had been sent by the Pharisees in Jerusalem to find out who he was and whether he was a prophet. His only response was to point them to Jesus as being: a. Lord and Saviour and b. Lamb and Son (of God).

[The recording starts during a recap of the events in Acts Chapter 5] Chapter 6 begins with news of the first growing pains within the new Jerusalem church in the form of a complaint. The 12 disciples, not wishing to be distracted from preaching the gospel, call for a further 7 men 'of good repute' to be chosen to deal with the problem and thereby protect the church as it continues to grow.

John's Gospel begins with the good news that God offers us a real, restored relationship with Him only through His Son, Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate at Christmas. John refers to Jesus as 'the Word' who: a. 'was' - He existed in the beginning. (v.1-13) b. 'became' - what he was not - flesh. (v.14-17) c. 'is' - now at the Father's side.(v.18).

Within Solomon's Portico in Jerusalem the apostles reach large crowds with the good news about Jesus as 'the Messiah' and perform many 'signs and wonders' in His Name. They are again arrested by the High Priest and imprisoned but then released by a messenger from God who instructs them to return to the Temple to continue preaching 'all the words of this Life'. They must choose whether to 'obey God rather than men'.

In Exodus, chapter 3, Moses hears God calling him from a burning bush with instructions to lead the enslaved Israelites out of Egypt. When Moses asks who it is that he can tell the Israelites has called him to lead them, God graciously reveals his name for the benefit of 'all generations'. The name appears in the book of Isaiah the prophet and is used by Jesus on many occasions recorded in John's gospel.

Peter the Apostle encourages all believers to clothe themselves 'with humilty' because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble and will 'at the proper time' exhault them. In addition to being humble towards one another we should take pattern from Jesus' example and teaching, by submitting ourselves to God...who cares for us.

When Paul ends his epic letter to the Romans it is a glorious finish but Paul is nowhere to be seen. Instead he moves aside to reveal a full view of his master, Jesus Christ, for He alone: a. 'is able' ...to strengthen us to bring about the obedience of faith and b. 'is wise'. Therefore we should trust Him and his wise purposes to do what is right. All glory to God for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Can you spot fake religion? Fake worsjip? Both the Old and New testament passages featured begin with examples of authentic 'whole' religion which is marked by integrity/wholeness and end with tragic examples of fake 'part' religion which: a. is marked by hypocrisy. b. is the hallmark of the 'father of lies'. c. is a lie to God.

Genesis 3 reminds us of how the temptation of the spritual predator Satan led to the removal of man from the Garden of Eden. Paul's sudden and severe warning near the end of his letter to the Romans provides four ways to combat Satan's attacks: a. look up! (17a)...watch out for those who cause division. b. get up! (17b)...avoid such people. c. wise up! (18-19)...to subtle deceipt from 'serpentine servants'. d. chin up! (20)...rely on God's Satan-crusher.

Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

HBEFC LRes-7

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
